We’re still in an HD world. 4k is fantastic, but not essential…yet…there’s a lot of milage still to get out of traditional HD. I recently wrapped a project that was shot in 4k, but for a last-minute pickup interview the only camera I had on hand was HD (luckily it was the same brand, so the color science and overall “look” was the same). Take a look, can you spot which is which?
One is 4K, the other HD scaled up to 4k. Click the images to enlarge.
Can you tell?
That’s my point - hard to tell on todays modern TV’s (ie computer & phone screens). Why to I bring this up? Because we’re always being told to go out and buy the brightest and newest camera and filmmaking toy, when we don’t need too. Plenty, and I mean plenty, can be done with older tech (not to mention the price continues to get lower and lower).
Anyway, wanted to say that. Need a camera? Don’t feel pressured to 4k :) if you’re not ready. Just tell a good story…that’s all viewers care about - not cameras. Anyway, left is HD right 4k.
